The Xian Yun (线韵), meaning "Rhythm of Lines", explores the relationship between form, texture, and movement. Its cylindrical body is built from alternating bands of smooth reddish clay and textured lighter clay, creating a visual rhythm that wraps around the vessel. The result feels architectural and contemporary while remaining unmistakably Yixing.
This piece is handmade by Tang Zhiming (汤志明), a National Assistant Arts & Crafts Master (国家级助理工艺美术师) and husband of Senior Arts & Crafts Master Shao Junfen (邵俊芬). Rather than relying on a traditional decorative motif, Tang uses contrasting clay textures and carefully proportioned lines to create depth and character through the material itself.
The clay combines the warmth of Zini with the softer, mineral character of Duanni, resulting in a surface that is both visually striking and pleasant to handle. Over time, the clay will develop a richer patina through regular use.
Among the many teapots we encountered during our visit, this was one of the most distinctive. Its bold geometry, unusual clay treatment, and contemporary aesthetic made it impossible to overlook.
