The Bian Yuan (扁圆), or "Flattened Round," is a shape defined by balance and restraint. Its low, elongated body emphasizes elegant horizontal lines, while the domed lid, broad shoulder, and circular handle create a silhouette that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in Yixing tradition.
This fully handmade piece is crafted from original Di Cao Qing (原矿底槽清), one of Yixing's most celebrated clay types. Known for its fine texture, rich mineral character, and excellent aging potential, Di Cao Qing develops a deeper patina through use while bringing warmth and softness to the brewing experience.
Created by the young Yixing artist Wang Mingxuan (王明楦), an apprentice of master Liu Ruifang (刘瑞芳), this was one of the pieces that immediately caught our attention during our visit. Among many technically accomplished works, it stood out for its quiet confidence. The proportions feel deliberate and modern without abandoning the balance and harmony that define classical Yixing design.
What drew us to this pot was its individuality. Among dozens of more conventional Yixing shapes, this was the piece that immediately caught our attention. It reflects the confidence of a younger maker exploring personal expression while remaining grounded in traditional craftsmanship.
One only.
