The Xian Yun (线韵) series explores rhythm, texture, and geometry through clay. While other Yixing teapots rely on traditional curves, this piece uses sharply faceted surfaces that catch light from every angle. The result is surprisingly dynamic: as the pot turns in the hand, the planes shift between light and shadow, almost like a cut gemstone.
What makes this piece particularly interesting is the combination of clays. Bands of coarse, mineral-rich Duanni emerge between the darker Zini clay body, creating flashes of gold and amber that contrast beautifully against the geometric carving. The rough inclusions give the surface a subtle sparkle, enhancing the diamond-like character of the form.
Created by Tang Zhiming (汤志明), National Assistant Arts & Crafts Master and husband of Senior Arts & Crafts Master Shao Junfen (邵俊芬), this work is part of his exploration of contemporary Yixing design. Despite its modern appearance, the teapot remains highly functional, balancing strong visual presence with the practicality expected of a daily brewing vessel.
Among the pieces we selected in Yixing, this was one of the most distinctive. It feels equally at home on a tea table, in a design collection, or displayed as a ceramic artwork.
